As part of "DENDO Community Support Program", Mitsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) participated in Kawasaki City's verification of power supply to external battery of ventilators using plug-in hybrid EVs, in case of disaster*.
Kawasaki City conducted this verification, because it thought that it was necessary to secure the power supply for ventilators for home care patients in case of blackout arising from large-scale disaster which is more and more frequently happening recently and because the city, which learned lessons from the problems caused by Typhoon Hagibis in 2019, has also made its task to make better preparation for home care patients against disasters. Kawasaki City started this verification in order to consider the use of power supply function of plug-in hybrid EVs, as one of the ways to solve these problems.
This verification was conducted from May through June 2021 mainly by Kawasaki City, under the supervision by National Hakone Hospital, with MMC and Higashi Nihon Mitsubishi Motor Sales Co., Ltd(HNMMSC). participating in it in addition to two medical equipment makers as collaborators. MMC and HNMMSC provided plug-in hybrid EV Outlander-PHEV and Eclipse Cross PHEV model for use in the verification.
On July 7, 2021, upon the conclusion of verification which found the scheme was effective as a countermeasure against blackout caused by disaster, Mr. Yosuke Wakabayashi, Corporate Officer of MMC, Mr. Toshinobu Ohashi, General Manager of HNMMSC, and Mr. Tetsuo Komori, Director of National Hakone Hospital, visited the city office of Kawasaki.
On that day, MMC conducted the demonstration to supply power from MMC's Eclipse Cross PHEV model to the external battery that was covered by many media reporters.
Mr. Norihiko Fukuda, Mayor of City of Kawasaki, said that he was impressed by the promising possibility of plug-in hybrid EVs. "We have been concerned about possible shortage of power supply each time a disaster occur since the introduction of rolling blackouts at the time of the Great East Japan Earthquake. However, thanks to these vehicles, we would be able to offer the sense of security to those home care patients who use electric medical devices."
Mr. Wakabayashi expressed the pleasure at the fact that MMC's plug-in hybrid vehicles would be able to offer sense of security to those in need of medical care despite the disaster. "We intend to contribute to the society in various ways through the use of mobility".

(※)・Please note that in this verification, the vehicles were used to supply power to external battery not to supply power directly to the medical devices.
- Never supply the power from 100V AC power source (1,500W) of Outlander PHEV or Eclipse Cross PHEV model directly to any medical device.
- Please note that we have not confirmed compatibility with devices other than the external battery for the two models of ventilators used for this verification. This verification does not warrant that MMC's Outlander PHEV and Eclipse Cross PHEV model are compatible with an external battery of any kind of ventilator.
